When the founder of Yell Payment came to Ptera, he wasn’t just looking for developers to build an app.

Yell’s vision was bold: a digital wallet that would empower underbanked consumers to manage their money, transfer funds, access unique features, and use their Yell card for purchases — while at the same time offering businesses a complete platform to accept payments, manage their customers, track sales in real time and reduce interchange fees.

Turning this vision into reality meant navigating one of the most challenging industries: fintech — a sector where every design choice, line of code, and infrastructure decision is shaped by compliance, regulation, partner expectations, and consumer trust.

Created a secure financial ecosystem from the ground up, enabling both businesses and consumers to manage and monitor multiple institutions and accounts from a single access point, perform secure, frictionless transactions and access unique features.

Built with compliance at its core, the ecosystem follows multiple evolving data privacy regulations and financial regulatory standards (such as CCPA, and requirements set by FDIC, SEC, and others), safeguarding sensitive customer data while fostering trust and transparency throughout all interactions.

Designed and engineered internal workflows and infrastructure to deliver industry-leading transaction speeds. By architecting a scalable system with precision, YELL offers fast, reliable processing that enhances business efficiency and accelerates transaction completion without compromise.

Designing for Trust: A Compliance-First Approach

From the very first planning session, it became clear that Yell couldn’t afford to think about compliance as something to “add later.” Compliance needed to be part of the product DNA — influencing user flows, data collection, partner communication, and even how Yell would market itself to customers.

Yell’s banking partner had a comprehensive list of KYC, AML, and transaction monitoring standards. At the same time, partners like Treasury Prime (for creating applications, account opening, initiating ACH, and integration with Alloy), Marqeta (for card issuing), and Plaid (for data aggregation and account linking) each required adherence to their own compliance framework.

In addition, Yell needed to detect and mitigate fraud using real-time transaction monitoring powered by Unit21, while Alloy handled user identity verification during onboarding.

This meant compliance wasn’t just a requirement — it was a design principle. From day one, Ptera worked with Yell’s leadership to design every screen, process, and data flow with compliance at the core.

  • Every user goes through progressive KYC, handled seamlessly via Alloy.
  • Transactions are monitored in real time by Unit21, with suspicious activity automatically escalated to Bangor Bank’s compliance team.
  • Every ACH transfer flows through Treasury Prime, triggering automatic hold periods and return risk analysis — all explained transparently to the user in the app.
  • Card transactions through Marqeta are subject to MCC blocking, real-time spend controls, and geographic risk analysis.

Rather than hiding these processes in the background, Ptera designed them into the user experience itself. When users needed to upload documents during manual review, wait for transfers to clear, or had funds temporarily held for additional verification, they didn’t just see a spinning wheel — they received clear explanations of why these steps were necessary, how long they would take, and how Yell was protecting their money throughout the process.

This transparent, compliance-first design wasn’t just about following rules — it was about earning trust through honesty, especially for underbanked users who often feel left in the dark by financial institutions. Ptera embedded compliance into every aspect of Yell’s design, making trust a core part of the user experience.

Building the Tech to Connect Consumers, Businesses & Partners

While compliance shaped the user experience, technology shaped the foundation. Yell needed to seamlessly connect to partners like:

  • Treasury Prime for ACH processing and banking infrastructure.
  • Plaid for data aggregation and linking external bank accounts.
  • Marqeta for issuing virtual and physical cards.

Each of these partners had unique API quirks, data models, and compliance requirements — and those requirements changed as regulations evolved. Ptera built a modular, future-proof architecture where each external partner was an independent module, ensuring the platform could adapt without disrupting the entire system.

At the heart of this system was Yell’s central ledger, designed by Ptera to act as a real-time, single source of truth for all balances and transactions. Whether a user transferred money via ACH, paid with their Yell card, or received funds from another user, the ledger ensured every cent was accounted for — with instant reconciliation against external partners’ records.

This architecture wasn’t just technical infrastructure — it was the financial backbone that made Yell audit-ready from day one.

Building the Ecosystem: Empowering Consumers & Businesses

Ptera developed Yell’s consumer-merchant ecosystem, ensuring seamless interactions from purchase to settlement.

Ptera worked closely with Yell’s leadership to design and build an all-in-one business management suite, embedded in the Business web application:

  • KYB onboarding via Alloy, making business verification fast and compliant.
  • A mobile POS built directly into the business portal, allowing businesses to accept Yell wallet payments directly from their phones — no extra hardware required.
  • Real-time sales reporting, showing transactions by item, time of day, and customer type.
  • Instant settlement visibility, so businesses always knew exactly when their money was arriving.
  • Built-in dispute management, allowing businesses to see customer disputes immediately — speeding up resolution times.

This comprehensive ecosystem ensured that every Yell transaction benefited merchants and consumers — providing a seamless payment experience for consumers, as well as instant, transparent access to funds for businesses.

Analytics & CRM: The Brain Powering Yell’s Operations

To operate at scale, Yell needed more than transactions — it needed insight. Ptera didn’t just build an app; they built Yell a custom CRM and analytics platform that became the brain of the operation.

Handling sensitive financial data meant Yell needed bank-grade security. Ptera designed the entire infrastructure to meet the compliance standards of Bangor Bank and external partners from the start:

  • End-to-end encryption via Azure
  • Full audit logging with Azure Monitor
  • Role-based access controls
  • Disaster recovery plan

Yell’s disaster recovery plan, co-designed with Ptera, ensured regulatory continuity even in the case of system failures.
