YELL’s vision was to build a scalable fintech platform that could handle growing customer demands while ensuring compliance with strict financial regulations. The need for a seamless, reliable, and compliant platform was crucial to their business model.
We partnered with YELL to design a flexible platform that balances trust and compliance with growth, leveraging cutting-edge technology and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. Throughout the process, YELL’s leadership remained highly involved, allowing us to balance speed with regulatory requirements.
Building a fintech product isn’t just about coding — it requires deep industry knowledge, compliance expertise, and user-centric design thinking.
When the founder of Yell Payment came to Ptera, he wasn’t just looking for developers to build an app.
He was looking for a partner — one that understood compliance and banking partnerships, could design for trust, engineer for scalability, and create a seamless experience for both consumers and businesses.
Our solution prioritized compliance, integrating it into the platform architecture to ensure every transaction met the highest security standards. We focused on delivering a seamless, user-friendly experience while maintaining robust back-end security. By embedding compliance into the core design, we were able to deliver a scalable solution that aligned with YELL’s vision for growth and market leadership.
Yell’s vision was bold: a digital wallet that would empower underbanked consumers to manage their money, transfer funds, access unique features, and use their Yell card for purchases — while at the same time offering businesses a complete platform to accept payments, manage their customers, track sales in real time and reduce interchange fees.
Turning this vision into reality meant navigating one of the most challenging industries: fintech — a sector where every design choice, line of code, and infrastructure decision is shaped by compliance, regulation, partner expectations, and consumer trust.
To achieve success fintechs need more than great code, they require:
This is the story of how Ptera, in close collaboration with Yell’s leadership and a network of essential banking and compliance partners, delivered not just a product — but a fully compliant, B2C & B2B financial ecosystem, designed to scale from the ground up built from scratch to ensure a seamless user experience, operational excellence, and customer trust.
Created a secure financial ecosystem from the ground up, enabling both businesses and consumers to manage and monitor multiple institutions and accounts from a single access point, perform secure, frictionless transactions and access unique features.
Carefully selected and integrated specialized third-party services to optimize operations and enhance key features, ensuring a smooth and reliable user experience. These integrations were designed from the start to complement YELL’s core capabilities, improving workflows and driving operational efficiency.
Ensured compliance with evolving data privacy regulations and key financial regulatory requirements, protecting sensitive customer information and fostering trust.
Built with compliance at its core, the ecosystem follows multiple evolving data privacy regulations and financial regulatory standards (such as CCPA, and requirements set by FDIC, SEC, and others), safeguarding sensitive customer data while fostering trust and transparency throughout all interactions.
Designed and engineered internal workflows and infrastructure to deliver industry-leading transaction speeds. By architecting a scalable system with precision, YELL offers fast, reliable processing that enhances business efficiency and accelerates transaction completion without compromise.

From the very first planning session, it became clear that Yell couldn’t afford to think about compliance as something to “add later.” Compliance needed to be part of the product DNA — influencing user flows, data collection, partner communication, and even how Yell would market itself to customers.
Yell’s banking partner had a comprehensive list of KYC, AML, and transaction monitoring standards. At the same time, partners like Treasury Prime (for creating applications, account opening, initiating ACH, and integration with Alloy), Marqeta (for card issuing), and Plaid (for data aggregation and account linking) each required adherence to their own compliance framework.
In addition, Yell needed to detect and mitigate fraud using real-time transaction monitoring powered by Unit21, while Alloy handled user identity verification during onboarding.
This meant compliance wasn’t just a requirement — it was a design principle. From day one, Ptera worked with Yell’s leadership to design every screen, process, and data flow with compliance at the core.

Rather than hiding these processes in the background, Ptera designed them into the user experience itself. When users needed to upload documents during manual review, wait for transfers to clear, or had funds temporarily held for additional verification, they didn’t just see a spinning wheel — they received clear explanations of why these steps were necessary, how long they would take, and how Yell was protecting their money throughout the process.
This transparent, compliance-first design wasn’t just about following rules — it was about earning trust through honesty, especially for underbanked users who often feel left in the dark by financial institutions. Ptera embedded compliance into every aspect of Yell’s design, making trust a core part of the user experience.

While compliance shaped the user experience, technology shaped the foundation. Yell needed to seamlessly connect to partners like:
Each of these partners had unique API quirks, data models, and compliance requirements — and those requirements changed as regulations evolved. Ptera built a modular, future-proof architecture where each external partner was an independent module, ensuring the platform could adapt without disrupting the entire system.
At the heart of this system was Yell’s central ledger, designed by Ptera to act as a real-time, single source of truth for all balances and transactions. Whether a user transferred money via ACH, paid with their Yell card, or received funds from another user, the ledger ensured every cent was accounted for — with instant reconciliation against external partners’ records.
This architecture wasn’t just technical infrastructure — it was the financial backbone that made Yell audit-ready from day one.
Ptera developed Yell’s consumer-merchant ecosystem, ensuring seamless interactions from purchase to settlement.
Ptera worked closely with Yell’s leadership to design and build an all-in-one business management suite, embedded in the Business web application:
This comprehensive ecosystem ensured that every Yell transaction benefited merchants and consumers — providing a seamless payment experience for consumers, as well as instant, transparent access to funds for businesses.

To operate at scale, Yell needed more than transactions — it needed insight. Ptera didn’t just build an app; they built Yell a custom CRM and analytics platform that became the brain of the operation.
This wasn’t an off-the-shelf tool. It was a fintech-native system, designed specifically for Yell’s needs, combining:
This all-in-one control center gave Yell’s leadership real-time visibility into every aspect of their platform — enabling faster decisions, proactive risk management, and more effective marketing campaigns.
Handling sensitive financial data meant Yell needed bank-grade security. Ptera designed the entire infrastructure to meet the compliance standards of Bangor Bank and external partners from the start:
Yell’s disaster recovery plan, co-designed with Ptera, ensured regulatory continuity even in the case of system failures.
Yell’s marketing message had to balance financial transparency, value proposition, and regulatory trust.
Ptera worked closely with Yell’s leadership to:

None of this would have been possible without the deep collaboration between Ptera and Yell’s owner and leadership team.
Yell’s owner wasn’t a distant client — he was a co-architect, involved in every sprint planning session, every compliance decision, every design review. This collaborative mindset allowed Ptera to:
This wasn’t a vendor-client relationship — it was a co-creation partnership, where business goals, compliance realities, and technical possibilities were always aligned. That constant communication ensured faster decisions, smarter trade-offs, and a final product that stayed true to Yell’s vision — without compromising on compliance or scalability.

At Ptera, we believe that great fintech products aren’t just built — they’re co-created. When you work with us, you don’t just get developers. You get:
